5 Ways To Stick To Your Vegan Diet

  1. It’s Time To Clear The Fridge:

Unlike almost every other diet out there, a high-carb vegan lifestyle should not be reliant on the willpower of the individual. Remove all temptations from your home (Yes, throw out all the milk, cheese, and that freezer full of frozen sausages!). I understand that those with families who don’t intend to adopt this lifestyle, might not be able to hijack control of the fridge- maybe you could sneak one non-vegan item a day into the trash…I bet they won’t even notice. Trust me when I say this step is a BIG one.

  1. Carbing Up On Fruits:

When you crave food, you should listen to what your body is telling you. The human body has evolved to alert you when it needs energy so your muscles keep moving and your brain keeps ticking. When you deprive yourself of calories, the body will only respond with more intense cravings- in evolutionary terms, caloric deprivation preludes starvation, so the body is only doing what history has taught it to do: seek out food, or die. No wonder it is so difficult to walk past the cinema candy wall on an empty stomach.

  1. Connect With A Vegan Community:

This step can be undertaken in many different ways; I personally have discovered a beautiful community of Youtube bloggers who have inspired my whole vegan journey. I highly recommend watching Freelee’s and Durianrider’s Youtube channels, who promote the ‘Raw Till 4’ high-fruit vegan lifestyle. I also enjoy Megan Elizabeth’s videos. On a different note, there are some great meet-up communities online, however depending on your area, face-to-face meetups might not be possible. If you are at university, definitely sign up for the vegan society! If you have a social support team who eat the same way as you and respect your philosophy on nutrition and health, you should consider yourself the luckiest thing on this planet.

  1. Simplifying Meals:

A lot of the time, newbies to the vegan lifestyle try to substitute every item in their fridge for a vegan alternative. And while the vegan option is certainly a healthier one, they are often highly processed foods, such as Veganaise and Vegan cheese. Rather than spending all your cash-monies on the latest superfood, get back to basics and stock your fridge full of fresh fruit and veggies, rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes and pasta. Try a big fruit smoothie for breakfast, a big salad and sushi for lunch, and a bowl of corn pasta for dinner. Simplifying your diet and bringing it back to whole, plant-based foods will do incredible things for your digestion.

  1. Pick the ‘Bad Fruit’:

At your local fruit shop or farmers’ market, seek out the discounted fruit that may look off, but do not let your eyes deceive you- spotty bananas, swollen lychees and slightly soft yellow nectarines are PERFECTLY ripe. If the fruit does not look a little spotty or squishy, it’s most likely that all of the natural fruit starches have not yet converted to sugars. If you eat fruit that isn’t ripe, you better prepare yourself for some tummy aches (especially if you eat large portions of fruit/monomeals).
